Capello: Juventus made the same mistake with Henry and Coman

Former England coach Fabio Capello has said that Serie  A winners, Juventus repeated the same mistake made with Thierry Henry by selling Kingsley Coman too early.

Coman, who had a stint with the Serie A club, started for the newly crowned Champions League winners Bayern Munich in Sunday’s final against Paris Saint-Germain in Lisbon. Coman was preferred in the starting line up of the Bavarian by coach Hans Flick to Inter loan winger Ivan Perisic.

The Frenchman rewarded the coach’s faith in him by netting the winner against the French Ligue 1 champions to secure Bayern’s 6th Champions League trophy.

Speaking with Sky Sport Italia, Capello noted that having the winger in the starting line up means that he is enough to play for the club. He, therefore, state that Juventus keep repeating the same mistakes.

He cited the instance of Arsenal legend, Henry, who arrived at the Turin club at a young age, was allowed to move to Arsenal, and he flourished at the North London club. Henry became part of the invincibles that won two Premier League and two FA Cup for the gunners. He also emerged the highest goal scorer in the league four times.

Capello, who had a stint with Juventus as a coach, said the Turin club has now seen how Coman is towing a similar path now with the Bavarians.

The Italian further stated that Juventus failed to be patient, having identified the quality the 24-year-old had then, adding that they were expecting a young player to become a top player at the highest level immediately.

Juve had signed Coman from PSG on a free transfer. But their patient ran out in just one season. He was eventually released to Bayern Munich in 2015 initially on a two-year loan deal for €7m, with a purchase option for a further €21m.

Coman had during his Juve career made 22 competitive appearances, scoring one goal and providing two assists before being loaned out.

The Bianconeri also paid €12.5m to sign Henry from Monaco in January 1999. He was eventually sold to Arsenal for €16m seven months later.
