Atalanta captain, Alejandro Gomez, has emerged as the best Serie A player for June.
The football governing body has given him the honour for his contribution to La Dea’s push for another Champions League football.
The Argentine has been a menace to defenders creating assists for the team with strikers like Duva Zapata, Luis Muriel, Josip Llicic getting to the end of the balls.
Atalanta is having its best season in the Italian Serie A and Europ having qualified for the last eight of the Champions League.
Although the Argentine playmaker didn’t score under the months in review, he was able to record four assists in Atalanta’s wins against Sassuolo, Lazio and Udinese. This has helped his side to dislodge Inter Milan from the into third place on the log.
Reacting to the news, the Serie A CEO, Luigi De Siervo, said Atalanta is one of the most beautiful tales in the top league, lauding the captain Gomez for representing the team’s value with his quality, team spirit and self-sacrifice for his teammates.
While nothing that Papu is having an extraordinary season, Luigi said, the league has class, with players such as the argentine acting as the driving force for his teammates on the pitch with goals and assists.
Gomez has scored seven goals and created 18 assists in 40 appearances for the Dea this season.
Serie A will be presenting the MVP award for June to him during Atalanta’s visit to Brescia today.
Atalanta is currently on 67 points from 32 games with +46 goals difference.
The Gian Piero Gasperini’s team is the most scoring side in the league so far with 87 goals and conceding 41 in the process.
The closest team to their goal tally is Lazio, who has been suffering from bad form lately after recording back to back defeat against AC Milan and Sassuolo.
Having won their last nine straight games before 2-2 draw with league leaders, Juventus, they are in the hint for another Champions League season, and they could be the surprise package in the European competition.
