RB Leipzig found their way back to the third position on the log as they ruthlessly dealt with Mainz by recording a four-nil victory over Mainz with Timo Werner scoring a hat-trick.
Werner’s strike has now placed him three goals behind Bayern Munich’s forward Robert Lewandowski in the league top scoring charts. This was the forward’s (Werner) third hattrick in the Bundesliga as he had previously scored three against the same Mainz side after an 8-0 mauling in November the last year.
The game began as usual as behind closed doors as the voices of coaches and substitute players from each side could be heard around the four corners of the pitch.
Werner got his team ahead in the 11th minute as he opened the scoring in the 11th-minute after converting a low cross.
In the 23rd minute, Marcel Sabitzer whipped in a beautiful cross as the Danish Youssef Poulsen celebrated his 250th appearance by guiding the ball home with a brilliant header.
Poulsen then returned the favor by turning provider for Sabitzer in the just minutes before the half time interval as showed a composed finish to make it 3-nil. With only three minutes into the second half, Leipzig and Werner weren’t done yet, as Kevin Kampl played in the 24-year old forward in the area to register his second goal.
The waves of attack kept coming in from Leipzig as Werner completed his hattrick from Sabitzer floating freekick as he slammed it past Mainz goalkeeper Florian Mueller.
The win sees Leipzig maintain their third position on the log with seven points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich.
